Introduction
ABB’s digital ecosystem consisted of dozens of engineering applications developed independently over many years. Although each calculator solved a different business problem, the overall user experience lacked consistency, making adoption increasingly difficult and limiting the scalability of future products.
My responsibility extended far beyond interface design. I was brought into the project to define a strategic UX framework capable of unifying the entire family of engineering calculators under one coherent interaction model.
The objective was to establish a reusable experience architecture that would standardize how engineers discover information, perform calculations, compare scenarios and understand complex business outcomes—regardless of the specific engineering domain.
The resulting Unified Experience Framework (UEF) became the strategic foundation for more than twenty enterprise applications used globally by ABB customers.

The Unified Experience Framework established a common interaction language across more than twenty global engineering applications.
By standardizing component behavior, information hierarchy and user flows, the framework significantly accelerated future product development while ensuring consistency throughout ABB’s digital ecosystem.
More importantly, the project transformed highly sophisticated engineering calculations into intuitive business decision tools, allowing customers to understand environmental, operational and financial impact almost instantly.
The framework continues to provide a scalable UX foundation capable of supporting future engineering products without redesigning the user experience from scratch.
Approach
Rather than approaching the initiative as a collection of independent products, I designed a strategic UX architecturethat could serve as the foundation for the entire engineering ecosystem.
The first step was identifying recurring behavioral patterns across existing calculators. Through workflow analysis and information mapping, I defined a universal interaction model separating technical configuration from business outcomes.
This principle became the backbone of the Unified Experience Framework.
Every calculator follows the same cognitive structure:
- configuration
- validation
- simulation
- comparison
- decision support
Instead of exposing engineering complexity, the framework progressively reveals information according to user intent, dramatically reducing cognitive load while maintaining access to advanced technical capabilities.
Special attention was given to data visualization.
Users are rarely interested in raw engineering parameters. They want to understand impact.
For this reason I designed reusable visualization components focused on communicating three fundamental business dimensions:
- operational efficiency
- environmental impact
- financial value
Every component within the framework was designed as part of a scalable design architecture that could be adopted by future engineering applications without redesigning the interaction model.
Challenge
The project wasn’t about redesigning individual calculators.
It was about designing an enterprise-scale experience strategy.
Over time, ABB had accumulated numerous engineering tools developed independently by different teams. Each application followed its own interaction patterns, visual language and calculation workflow, forcing users to repeatedly learn new interfaces while solving fundamentally similar problems.
The business challenge was to create a unified framework capable of supporting highly specialized engineering calculations without sacrificing usability, scalability or flexibility.
From a UX perspective, the greatest complexity wasn’t the interface itself—it was translating sophisticated engineering algorithms into intuitive decision-making experiences that could be understood within seconds.
The framework also needed to support future products, making long-term scalability just as important as immediate usability.
